Why bank exchange rates differ from the mid-market rate
If you have ever compared the rate your bank gave you with the rate you saw online, you have probably noticed a gap. That gap is not an error: it is a margin that almost every provider adds on top of the mid-market exchange rate, and it is how most currency exchange services actually make money — even the ones advertising "zero commission".
Typical margins by exchange channel
Based on the typical dealer margins of retail currency exchange markets, here is what different channels usually add on top of the mid-market rate:
| Channel | Typical margin |
|---|---|
| Interbank market (banks trading with each other) | 0% |
| ATM withdrawal abroad | ~2% |
| Credit card payment in foreign currency | ~3% |
| Airport or tourist-area exchange kiosk | up to 5% |
On a 1,000 euro exchange, that range is the difference between paying nothing and paying 50 euros — for exactly the same currency.
Where the margin hides
Providers rarely present the margin as a fee. Instead, they quote you an exchange rate that already includes it. A kiosk advertising "no commission" while offering a rate 5% worse than mid-market is charging you 5% — it is just charging it invisibly. Card networks and ATMs may also stack an explicit foreign-transaction fee on top of the rate margin, and dynamic currency conversion (being offered to "pay in your home currency") usually adds several percent more.
How to pay less
- Know the benchmark. Check the live mid-market rate for your pair — for example EUR to USD — right before you exchange.
- Always pay in the local currency. Decline dynamic currency conversion when a terminal offers it.
- Prefer cards with low FX margins over cash, and avoid airport kiosks except for small emergency amounts.
- Compare the full cost. Rate margin plus fixed fees is what you actually pay, not the advertised "commission".
Every Valuta EX conversion page includes a comparison table that applies these typical margins (0–5%) to the live mid-market rate, so you can see at a glance what each channel would really cost for your amount. Open the currency converter to try it.
